Key summer safety tips for your clients

Share

With summer in full swing, it’s time to help your clients keep their furry friends safe and healthy.

Here are some handy tips you can share with them. And remember, the Vetdesk app (fully-branded to your clinic) allows you to easily send key tips like these and more.

Water safety

  • It’s great fun to splash around with pets, but water is not just fun and games… Make sure you remind your clients about how to keep pets safe around pools, lakes, and of course, at the beach.

Sure, their dog may be a great swimmer, but rip currents don’t discriminate. So, why not recommend a quality dog life vest? Plus, rips are just one of the potential hazards, including jellyfish, sea slugs, and sand indigestions… Better keep an eye on those furry friends at all times.
  •

Heatstroke

  • With heatstroke being one of the primary concerns during summer, take the time to explain the importance of providing a cool, shaded area for pets to rest. Also, offer advice on recognising the signs of heatstroke (excessive panting, vomiting, lethargy, drooling etc.), and what to do about it.

And don’t forget about the number-one recommendation: never leave your pet in the car, even if it’s just for a quick stop at the supermarket. No matter if they leave the windows slightly open, temperatures in cars can quickly ramp up.

Dehydration

  • If your clients’ pets spend a lot of time outdoors during summer, keeping them hydrated is key. Make sure you remind pet owners to always have a supply of fresh, clean water available, and suggest carrying water during outdoor activities.

Also, it’s a good idea to educate your clients on the most common signs of dehydration in pets, which can include lethargy, sunken eyes, excessive panting, and dry mouth.
  •

Sun safety

  • Your clients may assume that being furry means their pets are naturally protected from the sun, but this isn’t always the case. Just like humans, pets can suffer from sunburn, especially those with short or light-coloured coats.

When talking to clients during the hot months, stress the importance of using pet-safe sunscreen and limiting sun exposure during peak hours. With Vetdesk, you may also add sun-safety products to your online shop, making it easy for clients to purchase these essential items directly from your clinic’s website or app.

  • Barbecue precautions

    • ‘Tis the season to turn on the BBQs and gather for some good times. And let’s be honest, it’s no surprise that pets love to join the party, maybe seizing the opportunity to sneak away with a sausage or two when no one’s looking.

Just remind your clients about a few BBQ precautions. For example, it can be dangerous for pets to ingest cooked bones, certain condiments, and rich, fatty foods. And of course, they need to be kept at a safe distance from the grill to prevent accidental burns or injuries.
