What pet owners never see you do

Which parts of your work do clients never actually see?

Going Beyond, a new global survey by Boehringer Ingelheim asked this exact question to over 1,000 vets across 51 countries. And for companion animal vets, the answer was near-unanimous.

The detective work in every consult

87% of pet vets said the same thing: spotting hidden health problems and pain is the part of the job clients notice least.

You reach a diagnosis. You update the notes. The client leaves with a plan. What they don't leave with is the list of everything else you checked and ruled out.

Clients see the outcome, but they almost never see the reasoning that got you there.

A decade of training, delivered in one sentence

Qualifying as a vet takes years and years of study. That’s usually a decade-plus of training behind most calls you make. Compressed, for the client, into:

“It’s probably just X. Let’s keep an eye on it.”

Clients hear you say that. They don’t necessary see the years of training behind it.

Different species, same blind spots

It’s not just about pets.

60% of equine vets said detecting hidden pain and early disease signs goes unnoticed; 42% said the same about reading a horse's history and environment to predict risk before it becomes a problem.

The pattern holds across the board: the highest-value work appears to be the least visible work.

Make the “invisible” work visible

The fix isn’t more work, it’s narration.

Outcomes build confidence. Explaining your thinking builds something extra: trust that the client can carry into the next visit.

Tell a client why you checked what you checked.
Tell them what a “normal” result rules out.
Do it consistently, and the relationship starts feeling less transactional – and more like a partnership.

How Vetdesk helps

A content library built into your clinic's app – powered by Vetdesk – does exactly this in the background: the context that never fits into a ten-minute consult, sitting in your client's pocket, ready the moment they want to understand what you actually did for their pet.
